Cannibal Corpse - Tomb Of The Mutilated

Well this album goes down as a death metal classic because of the first track, Hammer Smashed Face, which is really the only "mainstream" death metal song ever made, thanks to its appearance on the Ace Ventura soundtrack. It's a bloody excellent song too, with everything I could want from a death metal song. It has some very catchy riffs, yet is a very catchy song. From that song onwards, the album has high points, and some riffs that aren't really tied in particularly well. It still manages to be sick and brutal all the way through though. The album loses points for the vocals, which overall just don't sound very good. They sound too much like a constipated bear, with not enough power. The screams just don't sound right either. The drummer simply hadn't developed to the drummer he is now, and still plays fairly simple blast beats, with not much variation, although I can compliment the band on how the drumming interacts with the guitar. This album is really good, but I think I'd recommend getting some other Corpse albums first.
