After I heard the first track, "Festering Vomitous Mass", off of Devourment's MOLESTING THE DECAPITATED, for the first time my jaw dropped, my body froze, and I simply said "Holy shit". The song starts off with a 25-second segment of an interview, then proceeds with a short distorted guitar lick, a pause, and then that's when the whole band comes together as one with the incogitable guttural sounds of the vocals and the extreme haste and perfection of every beat of the drum. It leads one to think how it is humanly possible. Unfortunately, as the CD continues, I felt the vocals growing more and more monotonous and each song remaining no diverse from the other. If I wasn't looking at the CD player advancing tracks, I would probably guess that I was listening to a 35-minute song. The guitar's are very low and distorted... almost beyond comprehension. Though the drummer is one of the fastest I've ever heard, Devourment does a lot of very slow-beat, mute-palmed guitar riffs. I think the bass is distorted leaving a small distinction between the bass and the guitar. Every track off of Devourment's MOLESTING THE DECAPITATED is quite repetitive leaving there to be nothing memorable about the CD. But for the most part, the drum beats are beyond incredible. My drummer listens to bands who only play double-bass, I showed him Devourment and he loved it even though he's not really into that kind of music! So there's definitely some good qualities about this CD. It just seems like Devourment is competing against all of the other simple, brutal death metal bands for who can grunt the lowest. A perfect description of them would be a watered down version of Suffocation except less entertaining. Devourment, without a doubt, have a lot of talent within them. Hopefully we can except to see a little more of that in their next release, along with some creative ideas. As for MOLESTING THE DECAPITATED, if you like simple, boring, repetitive, brutal as hell death metal, this is perfect for you!
