Deicide - Once Upon The Cross

Well this album has some of the catchiest riffs in death metal, with a really chuggy, headbanging sound to them. It's simplistic death 'n' roll (if that genre exists) at its best. With its conventional verse, chorus structure, and the album only being just over 28 minutes long, I'll complain about listening value, but just make sure you can get this album cheap, second hand or something. The blast beats on this are good, and it has quite an evil, brutal atmosphere. The song, Kill The Christian really makes me want to kill a Christian! Having said that, most of the lyrics here are really cheesy. "open the door, Jehovah you whore," "defecate on your book of belief," pretty stupid stuff. Still it's all about the music! The vocals are insanely deep, and I think Glenn Benton must have used some vocal enhancer here. When the vocals are really deep, but at the same time not very guttural or harsh, it becomes obvious. This album is in many ways a cult classic, but it has nowhere near the technical and songwriting prowess of their earlier "Legion."
