Gorguts - Obscura

Wow, absolute mindfuck! When I listen to this album I see so many brilliant qualities, but I feel as if it's due to my own weakness in interpreting music that I just can't piece them together or really recap on them after hearing the album. The first song, titled Obscura, despite its brutality and catchiness, seems as if it's there to humour you! What comes after is a jazzy blend of riffs, presented in a manner that is completely unique. This jazz influenced death/grind really transports my mind into another state of being. I think I'll have to keep listening to it for another year before I know exactly what to make of it. Like their Canadian counterparts, Cryptopsy, this band can trace back alot of its influences to jazz, in a far more chaotic and brutal form. The vocals of this band convey emotion and despair, going from roaring to what I'd call "howling." This album has really been a brilliant experience, both aesthetically and intellectually.
