Horror Show is power/classic metal band Iced Earths 7th full length album since 1991. They've been holding the banner for American metal through the years, but unfortunately they seem to be running out of steam. Horror Show's lyrical content is somewhat unique however, each song being devoted to a classic horror movie icon (with the exception of "ghost of freedom"). Some of the most notorious horror movie villains are represented here, such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Phantom of the Opera.

Horror Show is a splendid sounding cd production wise, each instrument is mixed at the perfect level. The problem with the cd is the quality of the songs however. Iced Earth has been playing the same type of songs with the same type of riffs for years now, and therein lies the problem with this cd. Most of the songs on this album sound VERY reminiscent of songs off of Iced Earths older cd's. They've taken 5 or 6 good riffs, and tried to turn them into 7 albums. Eventually people are going to get sick of hearing the same thing over and over again. Iced Earth really is a quality band with quality musicians, but they really need to be more innovative with their songwriting otherwise they will die a slow lingering death. That being said however, I must point out that "Damien" is probably the best song Iced Earth has ever done. It's an epic, dynamic song with tempo changes, vocal changes and such. "Ghost of Freedom" is the obligatory emotional ballad that Iced Earth has on every album. It's probably the only other song on the cd I enjoy, mostly out of the pure emotion that seems to be poured into it. Iced Earth are a very patriotic band, and this song is their tribute to fall American war heroes.

The decision that you (the metal consumer) has to make is whether or not it's worth shelling out 15 bucks for Damien and one or two other good songs. My recommendation is to pick up Alive in Athens if you don't already have it, as that has pretty much has every good song Iced Earth ever wrote on it (and then more). Burn a copy of Damien on cdr, then buy an Iced Earth t-shirt instead, if you really want to support the band. 5/10
