Krisiun - Conquerors Of Armageddon

Here is an unrelenting brutal death metal release from the gods of speed, Krisiun. The album starts out with the album's highlight, ravager. There are many highlights on this release in terms of musical performances as well. For one thing Alex Carmago may have one of the most brutal death metal voices today. The guitar playing is beyond amazing. When you see Moyses play these songs live it looks like his hand is vibrating! Great solos as well. the main highlight has to be Max's drumming. The blast beats are some of the fastest ever recorded! In terms of songs though the highlights are Soul Devourer, Intro/Ravager, Conquerors Of Armageddon and Cursed Scrolls. I truly reccomend this album to any fan of brutal technical death metal. the one problem I have with it though is that it is very repetitive. A lot of the octave filled guitar parts sound the same. But nevertheless this is the ideal album to headbang to. Hails to Krisiun!!

Fuck Max Cavalera! These brutal Brazillians are the real thing. Even if alot of the songs sound a bit similar, I can only sit back and be amazed at their sheer quality! It's difficult to describe their unique style, but the word "regal" comes to mind regarding some of the slower guitar parts. Overall this album must be the fastest death metal cd I've heard. It goes at a breakneck speed for most of it, with lots of pace changes that in reality change from really fast, to incredibly fucking fast! The vocals are perfect for this style, as the guy enunciates words fairly well, while still sounding incredibly brutal and deathy. He does very well to keep up with the speed that this album demands. Pace changes occur in the music, and are backed up by the same in the vocals, showing great versatility. For such fast music, it really has alot of feeling and atmosphere, as the lyrics are centered around Christian hate. I strongly urge you to pick this one up! It may take 4 or 5 listens to really appreciate this album, but believe me, it's worth it!

Every so often, an album comes out that may not be rich in innovation, technical value, or even variety, but is just so solidly written and violently energetic that you lose sight of whatever pretensions you may have about music this straightforward, and just bang your head the way you did when you were still getting your first taste of Slayer. This is one of those albums.

Those familiar with Krisiun's earlier work will recognize this style right off the bat. Scorching, early Slayer/Sodom-esque riffing with occasional chugging breakdowns; chaotic and whammy bar-tapping solos; absolutely blistering drumming with complex roll fills intertwined with continuous snare blasting; and menacing, roared vocals spouting blasphemous messages of hatred towards Christ and his kin. The formula is quite derivative of Deicide and early Morbid Angel, but Krisiun have always taken satanic death metal to greater extremity than practically any other band. However, on Conquerors of Armageddon every aspect of Krisiun's furious assault is tighter, more consistent, and more pummeling than ever before.

The most significant improvement over the band's previous effort (1998's Apocalyptic Revelation) is the cohesiveness of the sound. The band's playing has seemingly tightened up quite a bit and Alex Camargo is finally using some effective rhythmic vocal patterns - utilizing slurring of syllables to great extent, as opposed to past albums where he enunciated every word and made the verses seem disorganized. The drumming and guitars are now better synchronized to create a more punishing sound, and there is a bit more variety in Max Kolesne's drumming. Also, while the songs are still quite wild in nature, the riffs and solos are better arranged than before for a more controlled brand of chaos.

The main criticism many have had about Krisiun in the past has been their blatant riff recycling. Conquerors of Armageddon is, once again, guilty of this offense. I noticed several points where the opening couplet from "Abyssal Gates," the triplet at the start of "Soul Devourer," and a handful of other riffs got rehashed at different segments of other songs with slightly different note progressions. While this does give Krisiun somewhat less credibility as songwriters, it really doesn't adversely affect one's enjoyment of the album as a whole (I'm speaking for myself here). While the riffs are recycled, they hold their places in their respective songs quite well. However, the issue of progress will be raised for the band's next offering - if they don't break the habit of rehashing their riffs, it will hurt them in the long run. No band should do the same thing forever... That's why AC/DC sucks so much.

Some people (who shall remain nameless) have complained that Conquerors of Armageddon lacks the brutally magniloquent personality of the band's first three albums. I personally don't see where this opinion is rooted. The only real differences are improved musicianship, production, and songwriting - at its core, this is still very much the same sound.

All in all, Conquerors of Armageddon is a 41½-minute non-stop headbangathon. I defy anyone who deems him/herself a metal fan to say they don't get up and thrash around their room from the moment "Ravager" kicks in all the way through to the harmonics at the end of "Endless Madness Descends." I'm fairly certain that even critics who piss and moan about the lack of innovation or avant-garde qualities here secretly love this album for its relentless nature and overall catchiness. In fact, my only real complaint with this album is that it wears me out from moving around too much while it's playing. This is what death metal is all about right here - absolutely uncompromising brutality. ALL HAIL KRISIUN!

Armageddon is here! Everything is enveloped by violence. The forces of Satan along with christ have come from their kingdoms to judge us, the human race, for the final time. The Four Horsemen have arrived, commanding their horses and setting ablaze everything in sight. Children are screaming, women are crying. Your home is in flames and all you can do is stare. Stare into your blazing home. You learn that your friends have been wiped out earlier and your town is the last to be rampaged and raped clean by the hordes of the gods. You pray but who is there to pray to? Both of them are trying to kill you. You scream with panic. What are you going to do? Where are you gonna go? What will happen next? Who's gonna win?!

The fire is spreading, the wings of the antichrist hovers above you and he dives his fierce body towards your direction. He pierces your body perfectly in the center of your torso. You scream in pain and try to escape but you are helpless. You stare directly into its eyes and you see all the hate that will last for all eternity. You go blind. The antichrist is too powerful for any mere mortal to look into. You feel yourself drifting away, as if sipping out of your physical self. You are correct. You are dead. Guess where you're going? Wonder where Krisiun comes in? They provide the soundtrack.
