Lunaris - Creative Destruction

Well, yet again, I get the privilege of reviewing a new band. Lunaris is a great band. That's the short overview of it. You want the long description? Well here we go.....

This cd is a demo of really good things to come. And let me tell you, you're missing out if you don't have this demo or at least the mp3's. You can find them at www.mp3.com/lunarisweb. There are three songs on this demo: 'A Final Journey', 'In Contempt Of Humanity', and 'Soulcrush'. Lets go through the tracks one by one.

'A Final Journey' is a fuckin' raw black metal track. Never boring, great riffing, vocals are excellent. Just a really well-done song. The intro to the song is entertaining as well. And I don't usually care a lot for intro's. It sets the mood for the song itself very well. No single part of the music is emphasized more than any other. Vocals, guitars, and drums are all very well balanced throughout the whole song. It has a similar atmosphere to earlier black metal. Not a lot, but enough to fill out the empty space and keep it fresh.

'In Contempt Of Humanity'...... damn. Yet another great track, and my personal favorite. And also another intro, this one using piano/keyboards. A considerably faster track than the previous. Not as raw sounding as the previous either. Which is definitely better for this one. There are some dual vocals in this one it seems. And I must say, it's an excellent combination. The guitars are still creating lots of feeling with some monster riffing. About two thirds the way into the song, the piano starts up again, how lovely it sounds, and how well it fits into the song. But then, you get a blast of more fast and heavy blackness to finish off the song, and then there is an interesting fade to the end. You have to hear it for yourself to understand.

And last, 'Soulcrush'. My other favorite next to 'In Contempt..'. This one doesn't start off with any kind of recognizable intro, it just starts invading your ears right off the line. It's tough for me to describe this song. It has a great all-around black metal vibe to it all the way through. It has a great use of keyboards with short little melodies that add very well to the song. At the middle of the song, you'll hear a riff that sounds kind of like it should be in a speed metal album, but it fits the sound so well in the manner that it's done. Most of the way through the song there is some melodic vocals that give a feeling of being in another place, or at least, they do that for me. They end the song, and hence ends a great experience of music.

If I had the time to fish though a dictionary and thesaurus, I would be able to find more expressive words to describe this band. Their new debut album will be coming out sometime early 2001, hopefully, as I am eagerly awaiting a masterpiece of metal. Again, if you don't have the demo, go to www.mp3.com/lunarisweb and download the three tracks that are there, they are the whole demo, and they will be well worth the download time. I have to give this demo a high rating, as a review shouldn't be rated on length of the overall cd, and it just does something for me. I love it.
