Well, honestly, when I first saw the advertisement from one of the band members of Serberus that said they would send out free demo cd's to whoever asked for them, I though, "Wow, great, free cd's. That'll be worth it even if the band is horrid." Damn, was that the wrong assumption to make!! I got my cd in the mail a couple weeks after asking, and by that time, I had almost completely forgotten about it. So, it came, I threw it in my stereo, not expecting what to hear. I saw on the flyer that came with it, 'Aggressive Melodic Death Metal', and me, not being extremely knowledgable about many terminologies, had no clue that that meant simply, Gothenburg. So I listened, and was blown away. I was rather impressed. The music sounds similar to In Flames, but not so much that they sound as if they are merely copying them. They have the sound, and they take it and mold it to their own band. It's a fairly long cd for having four songs, as each is around 5 minits long, plus there is a bonus live track of the first song, 'Ancient Throne'. Each song is different, yet the whole cd flows together very well indeed. The vocals are great, and put to good use throughout each song. All in all, I can't really put a finger on any one thing that brings this cd down at all. There is only one thing, minor as it may be, that the vocals seem to be a little overbearing, and that the guitars don't get enough 'oomph'. They don't really take away from the music, but it's just one of those minor things that could be touched up, IMHO. But after hearing this demo cd, I'm eagerly awaiting their full length album, set to come out early 2001, from what I was told. If you haven't gottten this demo, GET IT NOW. All it takes is getting off your lazy ass and e-mailing these talented musicians and asking them for a free demo. E-mail them at: info@serberus.com. To the guys from Serberus, you guys are great, have lots of talent, and I look forward to you guys being one of the next popular underground metal bands to come around :)
